It seems like every month there’s a new type of healthy lifestyle out there, but one that’s here to stay for sure is Paleo. But what exactly is ‘paleo‘?
The Paleo lifestyle – also called the “caveman diet” – believes that the healthiest diet to follow is the one humans are genetically engineered for which is the presumed diet of the Paleolithic humans ( our ancestors that lived during the Paleolithic era!). This , of course, doesn’t mean we have to adapt the “cavemen” lifestyle our ancestors had. But their diet, what and how they ate, that’s what’s of our interest. The lifestyle makes several assumptions about the human genetics:
- Our genetics have not changed compared to the ones of our Paleolithic ancestors.
- Modern humans are adapted to the diet of Paleolithic humans.
- Modern science has the ability to determine what such diets consisted of.
As a rule of thumb: if, back in the day, the food could be hunted or gathered: you can eat it. If the food requires modern day processes to create it then sorry – it’s out of the picture (e.g. pasta, cereal and candy). People who eat paleo, mostly eat: fish, grass-fed pasture-raised meats, eggs, vegetables, fruits, fungi, roots and nuts.
The paleo diet have shown great health improvements to dedicated followers of the diet, greater than health benefits of any other diet. Symptoms of migraine, arthritis, cholesterol and high blood pressure can reduce seriously just by applying the paleo diet to your lifestyle. Although we must admit that the paleo diet is still a topic of controversy among dietitians and anthropologists.
